How do I reduce the chances of being burglarized?

1. Think about security when landscaping:
Design your yard with home security in mind. Make sure to use straight sight lines so other neighbors can see your yard. Having a solid fence brings privacy but makes it easy for burglars to work undetected.

Homeowners should keep tree branches trimmed up to 6 feet off the ground. Shrubs should be maintained to a maximum height of 3 feet. Following these yard tips will eliminate places for burglars to hide.

2. Utilize or add outdoor lighting:
Make sure you have potential entry points covered with lights to deter unwanted access. Using automatic timers, motion sensors, or photoelectric lighting systems are highly recommended for homeowners. For homeowners with large areas that need lighting we recommend mercury vapor or high-pressure sodium lights.

3. Secure your home properly:
Make sure you replace all hollow doors or doors with alot of glass. Solid metal or wood doors provide the best protection from entry attempts. Ensure you have deadbolts with a minimum 1" throw installed on all exterior doors. There are two types of deadbolts; single -cylinder and double-cylinder with the most protection being double-cylinder.

4. Securing your household windows:
There are multiple ways to secure your home windows inexpensively. The most common types are window locks and window pins. Both locks work in the same fashion however window locks are more secure when used properly in the closed position. Windows pins placed above the window to keep it from being raised past a certain point.
